A simple search on the topic of change management yields an abundance of information, and rightfully so. Not performing change management correctly could mean a lot of unnecessary headaches for both you and your project.

If a step-by-step guide to implementing change is followed, anyone can be convinced to be on board. But while much of the information you can find is informative and relevant, most of it overlooks a fundamental aspect—one that is the reason for the change itself.

Let’s focus on the missing piece of that equation…

“But I capture change already!”
To be clear, I am not talking about change management like that defined as a project scope change. The change I want to address is more challenging—a different way of doing business, a cultural change, a procedural change that is being driven throughout an organization or project team. Something that we are asked to do in a different way than it’s done now, often a permanent or significant change with long-term effects. One that may receive pushback for various yet legitimate reasons, or just leave people scratching their heads asking, “Why?!”

Even if you use a step-by-step guide to persuade people, that doesn’t address the fact that if they don’t believe in the need or reason, the best efforts to push for change are lost. Even people who are…
