Many of us say we want to be more efficient, but what exactly does that mean, and how do we do it? Maybe we think, “It’s simple. Those who are fast are efficient; and those who are slow are not. So, just go faster!”
While it’s true that speeding up can create more efficiency, did you know that slowing down can, too? In this article, I will share how I think of efficiency and suggest ways to pursue it.
Lasting Efficiency
I am a process improvement professional with over 20 years of experience. I tend to see business through the input-process-output (IPO) model:
- Input – Resources such as cash and raw materials
- Process – Work that transforms the inputs into products that customers want
- Output – Results such as profits and smiles
Using this model, the creation of efficiency can be viewed simply as the maximization of output relative to the input. The efficiency of our process is determined by this ratio:
- Efficiency = Output/Input
- More output from less input yields greater process efficiency
