My Project Management Journey
Welcome to PMIEF’s student project manager series. In support of PMIEF’s global youth serving non-profit partnerships, PMI and PMIEF will be highlighting the exceptional student project managers from regions all across the world. We’re thrilled to introduce this series with a post written by Ayush Mishra, 17-year-old student at the University of Chicago School Labs. In his post, he shares his experience as his team’s project manager in the Formula 1 in Schools Competition—and how learning project management has impacted his day-to-day life.
This past academic year, our team Aeros Racing won first place at nationals in F1 in Schools, a tournament in which teams from across the country build and race model cars. F1 in Schools is a multidisciplinary competition that encompasses 3D design, manufacturing, content creation, and marketing into one project.
As team leader, my job was to use key principles of project management to ensure that the development of our project ran as smoothly as possible.
While looking for project management inspiration, I came across a guide that PMIEF made in collaboration with F1 in Schools. Using support from the guide, I started by creating a project charter, which outlined key stakeholders, our scope, and different milestones/ deliverables that we wanted to achieve.
