Focus on DEI to Be a Better Leader
All teams are made up of diverse people. Your ability to identify and integrate the diverse characteristics of individual members into a coherent and productive unit is one measure of your capability as a modern team leader.
Here are some tactics to use with your team at the beginning of a project and when execution is in progress. These will work for your team even if your organization does not have good diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs or awareness.
Consider Additional Preparation
Before you get started with tactics, make sure you have proper training. You may feel a lack of confidence in managing DE initiatives, and this is natural and expected. Trying to improve how team members are treated relative to their culture, ethnicity, gender, religion and more can be a challenge.
- Seek additional training, especially that provided by your organization. Such training should fit in with the organization's values and business strategy.
- Where possible, look for online courses, presentations and support materials provided by the organization where you work.
- If you work in an environment that does not support DEI at all, continue building your knowledge using PMI resources and other trusted resources.
