No Time for Face Time?

The rise of the telecommuting remote worker has enabled many companies to transcend organizational and geographic boundaries and revolutionize how employees meet, collaborate and share information with co-workers, clients and partners. The only problem is that managing a project team is hard enough when everyone is in the same office. Things get a little more complicated when your team is remotely spread out on four continents across five time zones.

The biggest challenge I've encountered in managing virtually is in communicating with my team members. The most important thing to keep in mind when managing a remote team is that there is no such thing as over-communicating to a virtual worker. When you're working in the same office, you tend to communicate project issues based on the assumption that if your team member is not sure about a vague request, he or she can always come up to your desk to clarify the issue. When your team members live across five different time zones, you can't always be there to answer questions in real-time.
