I am a employee whose role has evolved over the past few years to primarily focus on those projects that need to be done that no one has time to complete. I am tasked with completing projects to better the company and would like some advice and/or guidance about PMP certification for my team (is it worth the effort, expense and time to complete the certification) versus classes designed for the unofficial project team to better their efficiency.

To qualify for, and subsequently receive, the PMP accreditation, there needs to be a solid grounding in project management principles anyway.

I would suggest focusing on ensuring that all team members that contribute to this endeavour have undertaken formal training of the project management discipline and followed it up with on-the-job learning.

Once a cohort has reached that level, then a separate review can be conducted to see if the PMP will help them.

(Progressive elaboration.)

The PMBOK can provide a good framework for your task of completing these projects. The PMP will help you focus on developing the skills you need to succeed and participating with PMI and this website can provide with access to resources and advice that can help you on your journey.
