I personally believe its very important for a PM to be politically aware of his environment. He must and should be aware of the issues or challenges he would face and know the power equation amongst his stakeholders. A PM with high political awareness would be highly effective and hence successful.

A valid point, absolutely, but would this not be applicable to any discipline?

Totally agree. A PM however would require this art for sure as he manages stakeholders and if he doesnt understand the dynamics of politics in his organisation he would fail miserably

Let me put a disclaimer, when I say Political the general perception is its bad. However, being politically aware is to know who are the people who hold power and you know whom to engage for the tasks to get rolling. There may be times when you need to stay neutral but mostly we need to actively involve ourselves. Especially as Project Managers.

Just to second my view I am sharing this link from Youtube a HBR video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGdRyPN3IRk

Success lies many factors on of them is politics. I would request stakeholder to add 5% of project duration time. There is no projects goes without politics its part and parcel. I would strongly recommend PMI to introduce Project Bureaucracy Process.

He should be aware of course as it helps with Stakeholder and Risk Management.

Keep your friends close and your 'enemies' closer may apply even to projects. As stakeholders interest play a major factor in their support (or non-support) for a project, I agree that awareness of an organization's power-play would be essential for project success.

I do not agree. First, power is not the same than influence. Perhaps you are talking about influence. Second, it is impossbile to be aware of political into your organization because you never have the whole information. People that behave according to politics will never give information or the right information. So, do not worry about that or you will not perform your work as needed. Project Manger that took that way of work (understand the politics but not try to take the details and behave according to it) will have a hard work up in front because they must put objective things that will be subjective. But that is the way to survive.

I think it is important for the PM to be aware of and understand the bureaucracy in their organization. As Rami said it is very important in Stakeholder Management and Risk Management. I would also add Communications Management. But do not let the bureaucracy overwhelm you. Focus on the work and the outcome.
