Technical input of a project manager
Network:264

Through a poll, I got multiple comments about technical input of a project manager. I want to clarify that If a manager does one or all among following:

(1) Participate in technical/design discussions
(2) Does some technical work practically
(3) Perform testing

Is it recommended approach or he/she should focus on key management aspects like communication, risk management, monitoring, reporting, influencing etc.?

Amir -

I would say that if he is performing activities 1-3 on any type of ongoing basis vs. on an exception basis, he might be putting the project at risk. It is similar to the conductor of an orchestra who steps away to play an instrument - while the individual artists are all professionals and able to follow the score sheet in his/her absence, at some point, the harmony will be lost...

Nothing you list above is about project management. Is about business analysis except bullet 2 and 3. Project management is about all related to project and project is about activities but not performing activities.

Section 1 is a project management process technique.
Subsection 2 is a project activity.
Subsection 3 can be part of quality planning and / or monitoring and control.
The project director can participate in clause 1 to resolve the conflict, the rest are activities of the project team in charge of them.
Its main focus should be to monitor and control the project, and constantly analyze the risks.
Items 2 and 3 are not project management.

Your post refers to a "project manager" and a "manager"; these are two different roles, so clarification is needed.

Please consider 'project manager'.

I would agree that the PM only does item 1 at least in Construction which is participating in technical / design discussions but certainly not the other two activities.

Thanks everyone. Consent is there item 2 and 3. However, there seems different opinions for item 1 (Participate in technical/design discussions).

In any case, example of 'orchestra' by Kiron is excellent.

For #1, I would say a project manager may facilitate the technical discussion more than participate. As a PM you will want to be aware of the technical direction and any issues. You may not get into the details, but you will want to facilitate solutions, etc.
