Does anyone have any case studies about Project Gate Review Implementation?

We're working with another organization to try and implement the Project Gate Review process, and I am trying to use real life case studies to reinforce the importance of the process, and demonstrate success elsewhere.

No case studies but I've worked with and set up many project governance models based on gating. Usually the based outcomes result from the gating model making PMs obsess over checklists rather than good PM practices and the heavy or onerous nature of the review & approval processes (e.g. it takes longer to get funding for the next phase than the duration of the phase itself!).

Our company uses gating as a readiness check for approvals to the next phase. Questions are formed around scope, design, schedule, costs, lessons learned, risk, contingency management, project controls, baseline, communications, quality management, permitting, health & safety, procurement, resource management, , testing & commissioning.

Unfortunately, we do not have any case studies.

We have gates to move from Concept to Order of Magnitude Study to Prefeasbility Study to Feasibility Study and finally to Execution. Each stage need to pass through technical peer reviews, business evaluation reviews followed by funding approvals by a investment committee. The process remains same, rigor and approval authorities can vary deepening on value of funding request

You may not need case studies to reinforce the importance of the process. If these these programs are important enough to have gates, because key decisions need to be made before moving on, that alone reinforces the importance of the process, and the fact you are implementing the Project Gate Review process. What about the organization you are working with? Are they the customer or consulting to you in this process? If the latter, perhaps they have case studies.

Thanks everyone, I was hoping to find some statistics or measurable results about how the Gate Process impacted an organization after it was implemented.

The organization we're working with would not have the case studies.

Please let me know if you have heard of any talks or any good material on Gate Review processes!

I do not have case studies. But I was in charge to define the governance process for portfolio/program/project management in my actual organization. I used the stage gate model to do that (www.stage-gate.com/). It is the process that is in place today.

Thank you Sergio, I actually found this site and a few related case studies.

Alot of hunting, but I was able to find case studies that helped to frame the conversation.

Inside the website I shared you can find my former CEO talking about the method applied to other type of things.
But perhaps this could help more:

Hi Brian

I came across this post and was wondering if you could share the site you found. I'm looking at presenting both the benefits and pitfalls that a gate process can create, and any insight you could share would be appreciated.

Thanks
Michael
