Did you conduct a Post-Mortem meeting?

A long long time ago, I participated in a post-mortem meeting, lately I'm not using this tool.

What are the benefits that you found conducting a post mortem meeting? Does it impact your upcoming projects as regular "lessons learned"?

^ :)

I think we can all agree the term ‘post-mortem’ has a strong negative connotation and overall pretty cruddy.

I stopped doing them years ago. It was either a love fest or a complaint fest.

Now I do "future process modification" meetings. Don't tell me what went well or badly, tell me how you want to do things the next time that will be better. 100.00% of the people in 2 organizations loved that change in approach.

The retrospective meeting does include a process for what we want to do in the future, whether the meeting is called a post-mortem, final retrospective etc. or not. But to know what we want to do, we also have to know what we don't want to do, so past references are necessary. For example, we may not want to do what went wrong in the past, in the future.

Sante, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying there's no value. But as Andrew says, post mortem has a negative connotation. Branding it as something else has merit.

Perhaps we could use "Factum" instead of Mortem in keeping with the Latin tradition. Factum means "done". Or just keep it really simple like Post Project Improvement. Do we also need to rebrand "Kill Point" and "Murder Board"?

Yeah, I can't recall the exact wording I used, but it was something along the lines of "Process Modification", "Process Improvement", or something like your Post Project Improvement.

@Sante, I'm also not fan of "war room"... but not sure if we could re-brand all the terms that "we don't like" :)

Let's call it the "continually striving to get better by engaging with the people who can help make it better" meeting. Too long? :)

I used it one time, it is a double edge tool, it can open a lot of issues you do not need to discuss it by the end of the project with the client. If the client is mature and positive go for it.
@Kevin, thank you for your comments. Did you always conduct with the client? or also with the team internally?
