Malika, basically by applying for contract jobs once you have a certain level of skills and certifications, then it's really not that hard. I'm not sure about the USA, but over here there are so many contract roles.
It has been hard for me, I have my PMP and CSM and I feel like most jobs in the US are focused on years in a particular industry and not the knowledge and skillset of the PM.

It's a mixture of both Malika. Saving Changes...

I spent 1/3 of my career in consulting.
All the above answers are valid - I especially liked @Andrew C.
But since it seems that you never worked in consulting, maybe you should also ask, not only for positives, but also for all the negatives.
I will give you one, if you think that PMing as a full-time employee is tough, try PMing as a consultant to experience....

I agree with point 2 on Andrew's list. This is probably the most important one. For an unknown to enter the consultancy market doing so on your own is very difficult. Companies prefer to work via brokers because they feel safer that the filtering has been done for them. It is also easier for them to pay you then. Saving Changes...

Becoming a freelancer requires you to have a solid network. Remember the networking rule: you ask for a contact, not work.
So true. Saving Changes...
