How do you establish credibility?

We all know that establishing trust is key to credibility. In general, building a portfolio of successfully completed projects will do that for you. What deeper insights do you have on the topic? What are some of the best steps you’ve taken that have helped you earn the trust and establish credibility?

To build the credibility you need to prove. When you promise something you have to deliver it without any sort of escalation. It does not happen over night. This takes time. Once it is built, it is easy to drive the project.

Seem to be agreement that walking the walk and talking the talk will take you a long way and I agree. What this means is that credibility is not only built by successful project but also by being accountable i.e. take ownership of both successes and failures. If you are known as somebody with integrity who will stand up and be held accountable for decisions your credibility should be good. Remember that failures are not always the fault of the PM nor are successes those of the PM alone.

I think being 'level headed' during times of chaos, stress or confrontation adds to your credibility. People want to have an anchor to hold on to in times of rough weather.

Are you talking about within a company once you're hired, or networking and reputation for those not within your company?

Within a company, I make it a practice to understand exactly what each stakeholder or group needs, what it isn't getting, and where it's struggling. I then make sure I close gaps ASAP. That demonstrates an ability to listen & understand, help others succeed, and the ability to drive success.

For example, in one of my recent projects I needed to get an RFP issued ASAP, followed by a rapid contract signing. Legal was severely overworked as they would get flooded with requests and have to do tons of work. I have a technical background but I also understand both the business and legal issues quite well. I went to them with an RFP, highlighting the areas I needed them to review. When it came time to sign the contract I personally read every word, highlighted the areas I suspected they'd have issues, and walked it over.

In both circumstances I was spot on in my analysis, and the lawyers turned my request around in 48 hours when most people were lucky to have 3 week turnaround times. That success beget admiration from other groups, and generated a halo of credibility.

Thank you, Vivek. Concrete examples like this is what I was looking for. Being able to navigate cumbersome processes swiftly is indeed a great way to gain credibility and repeat customers. Excellent example!
