The PMI Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) Sixth Edition came with a lot of good changes. Besides the inclusion of Agile Practice Guide that provides a complete understanding on the different Agile Practices/Approaches, the changes made on the predominant ten (10) Knowledge Areas and the different Project Management Processes make more sense than ever before. For instance;

1- Renaming Project Time Management knowledge area to Project Schedule Management, since project managers do not manage time but define and manage the project schedule.

2- Renaming Project Human Resource Management knowledge area to Project Resource Management, since project resources span beyond human (team) resources but to also physical (other) resources. This also prompted the change below.

3- Transferring Estimate Activity Resources process from Project Schedule Management knowledge area to Project Resource Management where it best fits.

4- Under Project Quality Management knowledge area, Perform Quality Assurance process was renamed to Manage Quality. The earlier dealt with auditing the quality requirements and the results from quality control measurements, whereas the later deals with translating the quality measurement plan into executable quality activities. To me, the earlier Perform Quality Assurance seemed overlapping with Control Quality process. The new changes are now easier to absorb and apply.

5- Under Project Risk Management knowledge area, a new process “Implement Risk Responses” was introduced as part of Executing Process Group. Initially, implementation of risk responses was absorbed into Plan Risk Response process which was part of Planning Process Group. In my opinion, the implementation of risk responses was surely misplaced.

6- Among other key changes, you will also realize that Close Procurements process that initially belonged to the Closing Process Group was absorbed into Control Procurements process, leaving Closing Process Group with ONLY Close Project or Phase process.
From a personal view, I recommend all Project Managers who acquired PMP certification based on the previous PMBOK Editions to read the PMBOK 6th Edition. A copy can be directly got from Project Management Institute. It contains a lot more worth knowing.

I wish you all the best in your project management practices and good luck to those planning to take PMP certification exam based on PMBOK 6th Edition starting 26th Mar 2018.
