Taking into consideration requirements, material and the exam itself, do you believe the PMP certification process improved over the years and became more rigorous or not ?

I’ve seen many posts on linkedIn about PMP’s and the certification process which made me curious to know the opinion of various professionals across the globe. Thanks !

It's definitely become more rigorous, and prestigious. My issue, as many here already know, is with their application and verification process, which is part of the overall certification process.

Yes but the application and verification process applies to all certifications, not specifically to PMP and of course I agree with you, more clarity on this front would be great.

I think it has become more rigorous. The amount of material included has increased drastically. I think the prep courses have really stepped it up and that may be why more people seem to be passing.

Thanks for your input Dinah ! I just would like to know your opinion on PMI’s process itself in terms of application, exam and difficulty, not the preparation courses.

I agree with Dinah, the focus from many prep courses on the exam have really helped many with passing the exam even with increased material to study. I know it helped me. Unlike in the past, the options are limitless and very affordable now.

Thank you Kingsley. As I mentioned to Dinah, this is besides the point of the question. I would like to know your opinion on PMI’s process itself in terms of application, exam and difficulty, not the preparation courses.

Hi Rami,

I'm not sure if it is more rigorous, but it is more clear. I'm not PMP yet, but I know the PMBOK in every single word and some of its standards-related. In my opinion, they have been adjusting ambiguous things or things that have more sense, and also adopting trends such as agile, lean, etc. In fact, there is more information, but as I said before, I think is because PMI is looking to provide PMP certifications to people that know and understand the current trends.

Thanks for your input Jesus. You have some good point but I am probably more concerned with the certification process itself rather than the actual resources.

Are you planning on doing the PMP soon ?

Rami,

Not sure about more rigorous. Is the verification process more rigorous? Not that I know.

The exam used to be written( before my exam), now it is electronic with choices. That makes it less suggestive in correction.

There is more material to study and more support material. Exam duration is the same since about 2000 with more material it should make it more difficult.

Rigorous I can't tell. Are questions more on practice no! Still on the knowledge of PMBOK not on the understanding!

Other certifications exams are more on the application of knowledge with a case that develops over each section of questions.

Vincent, this is very interesting to know that you believe the PMP exam is knowledge based. I personally believe it is based on applying the knowledge because most of the questions are scenario based.

What others project management certification exams are more application based. It would be interesting to know.
