What new benefits an organisation can yield by introducing an official PMO role?

Many of the organisations don't have PMO role. Their project/program managers reports to people manager who lacks in project management skills. This is difficult situation for project manager to groom as clear path and role models are not available to encourage them. I intend to find out all benefits of having a PMO in organisation.

Organization's size matters. The setup of PMO can help with the alignment of corporate strategies across multiple programs/projects.
