Many of the organisations don't have PMO role. Their project/program managers reports to people manager who lacks in project management skills. This is difficult situation for project manager to groom as clear path and role models are not available to encourage them. I intend to find out all benefits of having a PMO in organisation.

PMO's are better equipped to align corporate strategy with project value, support project managers and projects with resources, templates, templates, etc, keep projects and project managers "in line" so there is a level of consistency and so on.

I agree with Sante and Rajesh. PMO not only gives guidance & direction to projects but also facilitate organisations to implement their strategic objectives.

Thanks

None except the PMO is introduced as a new physical business unit after making strategical analysis. To add some information this is an activity that belongs to business analysis and you can find it inside the standards. PMO or any other type of buisness unit has sense just in case the organization decided to define project/program/portolio management process as components of its strategy and then decide to put them into a new physical unit.

hey good discussion ....

I find this statement kind of harsh: "Their project/program managers reports to people manager who lacks in project management skills." And possibly moot because I think most experienced PMs on this forum could succeed in this environment

PMO can benefit an organization immensely because ultimately you need PMs/PgMs/SMs to be able to deliver your projects optimally.
1) Align strategic business goals with delivery - Collaborating with business/product owners for getting that roadmap which lays the path for the team.
2) Ensuring that we have best practices (Agile, Kanban, waterfall etc.) to suit the business that you are in.
3) When projects are not prioritized properly, everything fails or you are just playing catch up all the time - This is something you only notice when it isn't there! Team and company morale goes down!
