What are the traditional roles of a Project Manager?
How do they differ in the current context?
Can you share some of the practical experience where you have applied project management practices successfully to solve a project issue.

Hi Jayarajah,

I think it would be good if your question was a bit more focused. The questions below are broad enough that almost anything on the site would be applicable. Perhaps you could be a bit more specific?

Best,

Dave

In the meantime, " this document will give you a starting point re: the role of a PM.

Thanks a lot for giving me the link for the roles of PM. That is exactly what I was looking for. To tell you more, I am presently doing a small scale research to find out case studies where the project managers were successfull in applying their knowledge and skills in resolving issues like managing virtual teams, effective communication with the team, managing stakeholder requirements, identifying the stakeholder requirements at an early stage or any other.

I would like to see the correlation between the roles of a PM and the project success. 'Are we playing a significant role in managing projects successfully?' If yes How? is the question I would like all of you to answer.

I hope I can learn a lot from you and other members.

Thanks and regards,

Jeyakanthan

Thanks for your message Jayarajah,

So I think we are narrowing this discussion to "Virtual Team Success Stories". You'll get quite a lot by doing a Virtual Team Search here on the site. Many of our outsourcing articles may also be helpful.

Anyone else with a virtual team success story?

I've worked on projects with virtual teams seperated by time zones and continents. We effectively used Scrum to help bridge the gap. Some say that Scrum is for co-located teams, but it can work for dispered teams. First we would hold our daily stand ups, our team in India had their stand up hours before we arrived in the office and their ScrumMaster emailed me their input. I would read them to my team in the US at our stand up and in return send my feedback to the team in India for their stand up the following day. We used a virtual task board to manage progress through the sprints that both teams could see. Set up our CM environment for builds on demand or when new code was checked in from either the India or US team. There are many things a PM or ScrumMaster can do to facilitate successful projects with virtual teams. The key aspect is commitment by everyone.

My experience with virtual teams was mixed. Some people end up communicating very efficiently and often while other seem to disappear into the ether. The obvious and probably first rule of distant project management is to have, at a minimum, weekly voice communications. More of course would be better, depending on the project. But communicating exclusively via e-mail or IM over long timespans can really melt team dynamics.

Virtual Project Management is very challenging - and I certainly wouldn't put just anyone on a project where all of the team was dispersed.

I find that those individuals who are flexible and who are fantastic communicators are the ones who are most successful in managing virtual projects.

I watched the Indy 500, and I was thinking that if they left earlier they wouldn't have to go so fast.
