Someone shared a post - "Times When You Should Just Say "Thanks", But Don't".
Say “Thanks” when you're receiving a compliment.
Say “Thanks” when you’re running late.
Say “Thanks” when you're comforting someone.
Say “Thanks” when you're receiving helpful feedback.
Say “Thanks” when you're receiving unfair criticism.
Say “Thanks” when someone gives you unsolicited advice.
Say “Thanks” when you're not sure if you should thank someone.
Keeping above in view, How often, do you say "Thanks" to someone? Saving Changes...
I prefer to say"thank you" when I mean it. When I appreciate feedback or advise, when someone offers me help, when I receive compliments and sometimes when 'people do right things in the right way at the right time at work'.

Anupam - I say 'Thanks / Thank you' in most of the situations listed down in your question and even in other situations too.
Unsolicited advice is one thing which I will think about because I would say 'Thanks' at the end of the discussion though I don't appreciate it always. I may have to think and change my view here, if possible :-)

"Thanks" when you receive unfair feedback
"Thanks" when you receive congratulations of a work you didn't make
"Thanks" when you receive a price you don't deserve.

Saying Thanks is least you can do to express gratitude :)
Seems the PM community needs to work lot on this. While few never forget to say Thanks, majority will never take time to express it. Come on people you should say thanks, when someone reads your posts, question, blog, etc. and replies back. It will not make you lower :D
