I got my PMP after over 20 years PM experience for the following reasons:
- It shows that your knowledge is not limited to Company X where you got your experience
- It shows that you have knowledge not limited to a technical domain, like Mech. E.
- It shows perspective and/or current employers that you are actively developing your skills.

I also picked up some new skills along the way. (I found the most valuable way to prep was to take some practice exams and see where I should brush up rather than reading everything I could find.)

Apart from PMBoK, as Mr. Rami has suggested Rita Mulcahy PMP prep book is great book to refer. I would suggest be a member in various PMP study groups. These group discussions, blog posts and other forums etc will provide you insights.

As Sergio points out, you have to figure out what a PMP means to you, personally or professionally. It could be that it won't do a thing to help with work.

The journey to achieving the PMP designation can be its own reward. I find a lot of satisfaction in completing long-term goals. For example, last year I finally achieved my Distinguished Toastmaster. It took me over ten years of work to complete all my projects. Guess what? I actually hold my DTM in higher esteem than my PMP.
I am having 4 years in project and 10years in maintanance experience. To upgrade my career life, will PMP work for me.

This seems to be an old thread, but...

Just curious, Satyabrata, did you make up your mind to get certified as PMP?
