Hi PMs, Just a query on rolling wave planning. During course of execution, we come to planning to define activities and create CR and may update schedule baseline with approved CR but why not in cost? Why rolling wave planning not impacting Estimate Cost & Determine Budget process? Ideally as a part of rolling wave planning, it should impact the cost in planning.
Any idea?

Perhaps I do not understand your point but there are situations where the schedule has to be change without impacting the cost. On the other side, plan is not only schedule is all related to a plan then rolling wave planning could impact all related to plan indeed (scope, cost, risk, stakehodlers, etc. etc)

If activities are getting updated, the estimate cost should also be impacted due to rolling wave as new activities may need additional cost estimates. And which may cause change in cost baseline as well with approved CR.

Sorry but let me say you are wrong. As its name stated is about planning and planning is to create a plan and a plan is a document with contains all related to knowledge areas you have to include: scope, risk, stakeholders, etc, etc.

Besides Rolling Wave Planning is used for cost estimates - I am not sure how you concluded that it is not.
During progressive ellaboration when you add more detail to the WBS as enough info is revealed, your estimates will become more precise because instead of estimating a full planning package, you estimate decomposed planning package. Saving Changes...

Just because rolling wave planning shows up as a tool in Define Activities but doesn't in Estimate Costs doesn't mean one doesn't impact the other.
The PMBOK Guide doesn't show ALL the relationships from one process to another, and remember that the schedule IS an input into Determine Budget so after elaborating further activities when we update our schedule we might have to iterate back to Determine Budget to understand if costs have changed...

After reading Kiron´s post now I understood the point. Inside the PMBOK you will find references to rolling-wave-planning in several pages. For example, references when things related to WBS are stated, when some things related to schedule, etc. So, while it is named as a tool in Define Activities you will find rolling-wave-planning references in several other places as a way to create a plan.

The PMBOK Guide doesn't show ALL the relationships from one process to another, and remember that the schedule IS an input into Determine Budget so after elaborating further activities when we update our schedule we might have to iterate back to Determine Budget to understand if costs have changed...
