Project managers should not be entrepreneurial; that would suggest that they should take financial risks when in fact they do everything to mitigate these risks.

That is very good thing that being entrepreneur of a project can improve your personality because you are thinking that your project is your organisation and entrepreneur means developing your business or project. So try to sell the project ideas in your team members.

Actually, an entrepreneur is "a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit" and entrepreneurial is "characterized by the taking of financial risks in the hope of profit; enterprising." I prefer the term creative, innovative etc, but not entrepreneurial; it can be misleading.

Sante, as per the CEBGlobal now it is part of the Gartner, Entrepreneurs leverage their strong interpersonal skills and good judgment to effectively navigate project execution. They are flexible, prepared to change their approach if the business outcome warrants, and comfortable with risk and uncertainty. CEBGlobal did research and came up with following seven characteristics for a entrepreneurial mindset.
1. Stakeholder Partnership
2. Judgement
3. Risk Management
4. Team Leadership
5. Ownership and Commitment
6. Learning Agility
7. Business Knowledge

Yes, PM should be entrepreneurial. Because they do the project to meet strategic objectives of the organisation. They manage the capital investment of the company.

Despite Sante's formal definition of entrepreneurship, I'm a firm advocate of an entrepreneurial mindset for project leaders (I prefer the term leader vs manager). At the end of the day, it's still about the project's added value to the bottom line. Looking at a project as a standalone exercise is long gone.

Showing an entrepreneurial mindset is more than just showing ownership of what a PM does. Having sense of ownership to what you do, towards the project and your team is part of your commitment as a PM. In a way, I do agree with Sante but I also agree with John too, he raises a very good point about Leader vs. Manager. I prefer leader too !
