Hi Joanna, am also interested in these discussion topic you raised, my thoughts are that S/4hana is an upgrade on the Hana, just like MS Office 2013 and MS Office 2016.I hope answers do come in, but that said I still think you will get the best answers to this question on the SAP community forum on SAP web site.

Hi,
HANA is the Architecture structure of the SAP system. This data base structure accesses data via field columns vs traditional rows of data. Much quicker retrieval. Many companies are moving from SAP ECC system to S/4 HANA. Companies are eliminating custom code and using best practices that SAP has developed for all industries.

We use a SAP based enterprise system, and from my very limited understanding, HANA will be approximately 200 x faster in terms of data retrieval. However, it will not be fully rolled out within our organization I believe until 2025 if I understood correctly.

From Wikipedia - SAP Business Suite 4 only runs on the SAP HANA database, and thus it is packaged as one product: SAP S/4HANA.[2] SAP's classical R3, ERP and ECC based business suite and related products were designed to run on several database platforms, including those from Oracle, Microsoft and IBM.[3]

The main difference between S/4 Hana and the pre-Hana SAP releases is the fact that SAP redesigned the product for In-memory data management and the IoT possibilities. Furthermore, the App-approach does reduce the complexity of quite monolithic module approach as of previous SAP ECC releases.
On top of this SAP released a lot of new functionality and simplification with S/4 Hana.
