Encourage scrum - daily standup meeting within the team, foster open communication through knowledge sharing, team bonding and use of slack, brainstorming sessions on design, impediments etc for various solutions

When you want real communication you need to have a safe zone to encourage discussion and communication. That is what gives the best result in the end.

Effective communication is such an important success factor that I set the stage from the get-go. Think of using the RASCI and Bathtub models to set up the communication process. I'm also a propagator of the walking around management approach, physically and virtually. Bottom line is, just be there for your tribe.
