Do the project manager really need to have the business knowledge?

I would say there is very basic benefit - with business acumen you see much better what is the project supposed to deliver and contribute to the business. Such awareness influence your decision making, priority setting, risk management, change management. It have positive impact on your ability to manage relations with stakeholders. You may indetify synergies and manage your project in order to create additional business value.
In other words, you see better what is the purpose of your project.

Business knowledge is vital for IT Project Managers because the sole purpose of information technology is to support business functions. When technical Engineers forget this purpose they can end up wasting lots of money and time creating cool technologies that do little to benefit an organization.
