PROMOTED as a project manager from Sr.Business analyst-need input how to handle/start my role as PM(planning to implement agile methodology-Sprints, backlogrefinement)
Hi I am a Sr business analyst, now i am promoted to be a Project manager for a new team, Can anyone let me know how and what i need to start off with managing the team and streamline my team activities. I need a starting point and how do i streamline daily activities of the team. I want to follow agile methodology doing sprints Saving Changes...
I'm presuming you were a Sr. BA for agile projects, so you should have good familiarity with the agile process at your company. If not, that's where to start. The PMO can help, if you have a PMO. As a BA, you were probably most familiar with the Backlog - work waiting to be done. That's where the requirements are made firm and priorities are set by the Product Owner. Get a good feel for what's in the queue, especially those that are assigned to you, or likely to be assigned to you.
Then, I would meet with the Product Owners, first with those who already have projects underway. (Project Stakeholder Management). And also meet with your project teams. This means you need to attend the daily standups for awhile. Ask them (both Stakeholders and Project Teams) where they think you need to get involved, where you can add value right away. Address those areas first, as they have both visibility and emphasis from above and within the team. Saving Changes...
- Understand the business need, key stakeholder requirements,
- Understand whether an adaptive project approach makes sense to accomplish the business/ project objectives,
- if yes, make sure the team understands agile values and principles
- start small and simple,
- get an empowered PO in place and a scrum master for the team
- understand your role as PM (facilitator, servant leader and "translator" to the organisation)
- do an initial release planning
- start the first sprint
- inspect and adapt.... Saving Changes...
Hope that you received some training! now you need to take care of the forest not the weeds.
The common mistake that I observed from project managers that before they were BA's (me included) is micromanagement. Try to avoid that, you need to trust your team and don't put your hands on the system.
