I think knowledge and guidelines shared in PMBOK are very generic in nature and can be tailor made as per requirements of specific industry. Hence certified PMPs are eligible to apply this knowledge irrespective of industry type to achieve strategic results.
With addition to above few experts believe that in case of IT industry PRINCE2 is also most recognized approach for project management. But PMP is equally applicable to any industry with respect to maturity of Project management approach of specific organization.

Please correct me if some one have different opinions.

Regards,
Manish

Hi Ashutosh - I don't really see any [distinct] delineation b/t the two. Earning the PMP designation is industry agnostic.

Ashutosh -

Although PMI has added a lot of IT-specific content to its standards in recent years, when the association started the focus was mostly on traditional, non-IT project management practices. As such, I don't feel there is a particular affinity for one domain vs. another. As far as certifications go, I find this tends to be more of a geographic preference than an industry-based one, and I've only very rarely seen cases where a PMP certification was deemed to be a "must have" by a hiring manager. Yes, it is a simple filter for recruiters or HR gatekeepers, but when a hiring manager believes they have the right candidate, the presence or absence of a PMP is usually not the tipping factor.

It has to do with the nature of the project, and the project manager's background and etc.
