Nidhi Soni Assistant Manager| PCU Sf Bay Area, Ca, USA
I am an MBA and a PMP. I got PMP certified last year in March 2018 in my very first attempt. I still have not been able to start my career in Project management yet. I am looking to work in fiance/IT industry with my PMP. I have been in finance industry since 2006. I also worked as a High School Principle for 3 years where I worked on various project i.e. Construction project, school related projects etc.

Please help to guide my way as how do I start my career as a Finance PMP or even a non-technical PM. I appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

Nidhi, this is good approach since you already have experience in finance now what type of finance do you want to do corporate accounting as chartered accountant in that not much for PMP but for project related to Banks yes it would be very good beside finance license like mutual fund or you can do in trading companies / stocks

I congratulate for for passing PMP in first attempt it will absolutely open more doors for you. You can do business case for projects based on IRR, NPV, Pay back period, sensitivity test and Mont Carlo simulation
I am not sure in your area if they require a finance security license to be able to handle work related.

Hi Riyadh,

I have been working in banking sector. In banking we have project mangers but I have not been able to land a job as a PM in banking. I just do not know how to get there. I have tried but they always come up with this excuse that I do not have any IT experience.

Well Nidhi,

First of all I would like to congratulate you to clear PMP.

I have gone through your concern and would like to share my thoughts on this.

You can search for opportunities like Project Cost Controller, Project Finance Manager.

Every project based organization are having this type of opportunities.

I.e. You can control the Project cost at WBS or at Activity level as you already having the project cost sheet...right ?

Budget v/s Actual and Project Budget forecast are one of the major task which are being handled by Project Cost Controller or Project Finance Person.

And please do not be in hurry - I am sure you will find the way to utilize your PMP certification.

Just give your self some time and try to find out a suitable profile.

Best of Luck.

Hi Hitesh,

Thanks!
I know it has been almost a year and I still have not been able to land a job as PM. Despite being a scholar throughout my life and having all the educational credentials, I have somehow failed at bagging a job in PM. I do not know when will I get a PM job where I can use my banking experience along with PM skills.

It sometimes feels disheartening. But I continue trying.

I have applied to various IT companies as well for project finance opportunities. But I never hear back from them. When I talk to recruiters, they say that since I do not have an IT background, the find hard time fitting me in the roles. I am not even looking for IT PM jobs. I am focusing on non-tech PM or Finance PM jobs.

What are other job titles where they can use me best without any IT experience?

I thing you should not apply for the IT PM Jobs., rather you can apply for the Industrial / EPC / Turnkey based Projects for the Finance Project Management.

See, try to understand..for the different - different organization..they have a different strategies like..some have One Project Manager who looks after all projects and everyone is reporting to him.

Some organization is having PMs for all the departments like Civil PM, Electrical PM, Mechanical PM, HVAC PM, Safety PM, Admin PM, Supply Chain PM, Finance PM...

So do not apply only for the Project Finance PM..apply as I said earlier for the Project Cos Controller, Project Finance Executive.

If you don't have any experience handling the IT finance project then leave it..try some other organization.

Create the new profile / CV in a attractive way...

I am sure it will work...but you have to wait for the right time..till then keep trying and Never Ever Give UP...!!!
