We are already using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in some form or another - Using virtual home assistants, intelligent chat bots, predictive product suggestions or spam filters, we’ve most probably experienced the benefit of AI.
Starting a chat to get help, or asking a question is very tempting and sometimes very much needed. Would you abort the chat abruptly if you find you are communicating with a bot/machine? Or would you extend a courteous apology before you close the chat? Do we “respect” machines like human beings? And do we need to?

From my point of view , Yes. we should respect machines like human beings.
If you pay respect anyone or anything , it also reflects your behavior how much you are generous or sensitive.
As a human being ,we can do it.

Does it really understand if i closed it abruptly or i am closing with full respect. or does it even matter to the machine/bot! I understand it is just an action for it.

The question is how we are behaving when we found out its a bot.

From my experience, building and running large scale hybrid callcenter chatbots able to handover dialogues to a human agent and back again, this question has never been an issue and has never been asked. For us, it always has been obvious that customers want to have their eService delivered as fast as possible. So we always made it transparent when the bot on its own or a human agent are in charge.
I think - transparency is key to build trust.
But - agreed - their might be areas where folks are more sensitive on this topic.

Also depends on how much time you have to get a decision or close the task. Machine will not give a rebuttal as a human would do but its our values, mannerisms, gesture that matter and they will come into play regardless of machine or BOT.

Alankar -

Do you apologize to your toaster, kettle or smartphone (e.g. Siri or Google's assistant)? At present bots don't have sentience but once AI evolves sufficiently that might be expected behavior.

Oh this is such a fun topic. Thank you for posting. I respect machines in a different way from humans. Humans show emotions—- machines don’t . Is it not true that by yelling at a machine, it improves for next time? Seriously though, the machine is only as good as its capacity to evolve and improve. That is it’s purpose. I respect machines for the knowledge they provide and for their efficiency. Oh how often I find myself asking the machine for me to speak to a real live human being.

Interesting question. I usually extend at least a bit of courtesy to AIs and bots so one day I don't accidentally slip up and treat a human like an unfeeling, inanimate object.
