You need the actual photo of your project.

From Kiron answer, you should meet the sponsor and project team. Ask all the cuestions you coluld think. Could take PMI's knowlede areas and ask abouth each of them.

And then "Trust but verify current state", and build your own photo.

This will be you "as-is" state. Maybe you already have idea about the "to-be". If nedded, go back and ask new questions.

With this two images ("as-is" and "to-be") you colud figure the readmap and start working on it.

Lenka ,

At the outset I would suggest the following,

1.Understand the project objective and scope
2.Review the Project Plan
3.Review the latest project status report
4.Review if any open issues and risks.
5.Review the Project status with the Sponsor
6.Review the Project status with the Key Stakeholders
7.Schedule a brainstorming sessions with the Project Team
8.Create the mitigation plan for open issues
9.Create risk response plans for any open risks
10.Modify / update the project plan by re-evaluating the activity estimates.
11.Submit to the customer for the updated project plan approval
12.Execute as per the project plan.

I would start by reviewing the charter, scope, plans, and progress reports so you can go into a 1:1 meeting with the sponsor and stakeholders as prepared as you can be. Double-check to make sure the charter, scope, and plans align with their needs. Next meet with the team to get an up-to-date status report and set clear expectations. If there is a backlog or there were changes needed to the scope, work with the team to make plans to get the project back on track.

First in the KPI; the Plan of the Project, if exist; then, in the Scope or ennunciated brief and the Schedule. Finally in managment the communications because contain the stakeholders and form of communications with they.
If not exist anything Plan, I will be define strategie to execute the project and it control with the team of work.
