Transform into IT Project Manager's role from a Software Engineer's/Developer's role

What would be your approach in transforming into an IT project Manager/ IT Manager role after successfully completing PMP and having about 5 to 10 years of progressive work experience as a Software Engineer/Developer? Most people get their MBA and PMP and then try to switch to a managerial position. Without anyone reporting to you in the past but having led projects and a deep understanding of Software Development Life Cycle, how can you convince a company that you would be a good IT project manager? Also, would you look for entry level IT manager position or mid-level?
