Program Management in Information Technology context can vary industry to industry. Typically IT Giant companies that are into product making companies like Microsoft, Oracle etc have Program Management framework implemented in their industry to accomplish specific vision towards their output of the Product. They will also have multiple projects that are related to the specific Vision of the Program. The Program Management Office will be governing from the context of overall Program and ensuring that the Program is executed with all necessary inputs and processes. There can also be a Project Management Office that will overlap with Program Management office to ensure that individual Projects are being executed as expected with necessary Project framework methodologies.

The Program Management will slightly differ in IT Consulting & Service Providing companies. With reference to the PMI’s Program definition – “A Program is group of related projects managed in a coordinated way in order to obtain benefits and control that are not available from managing them individually” the above companies can also have a Program Management framework to service their strategic partners (customers) Vision. There are two sides of the same coin (Program Management) for this kind of scenarios. The customer can define a Program to accomplish his Vision & Goals set by his organization and will have different Strategic partner (Vendors) performing in this Program. On the other hand, if this is a very complex and large Program then each strategic partner (Vendor) will also define Programs within their organization to map their vision with Customer’s vision.

In general Program Management Framework should be aligned with respect to Vision of outcome Program irrespective of whether it is Product oriented or Service oriented.
