PMO practice meetings

As I recently read a very good article about Blended Learning for Maximum Impact, I´ve been thinking about the practice meetings.
Along with the usual based PM office status meetings, do you have some other regular meetings with your colleagues from PM field?
What are the topics on the schedule? Are you constantly working on how to improve project management through the company, usage od PM IS tooling, or just sharing an experiences from projects of yours?

In the article you can find those topics:
- Finding solutions to issues currently faced by the organization
- Brainstorming on current maturity to decide on priorities and development areas
- Developing the next practices you would like to implement in your organization
- Reviewing lessons learned from previous projects and making sure you extract learning for other ongoing projects as soon as possible

Would you consider to trully discuss those topics with your highly skilled PMs from office on regular basis? Do you have an experience that this is typical approach in the project driven companies?

It depends. May or may not; based on the situation, culture, etc.

We have communities of practice, however to have regular formal meetings is a significant time commitment, especially for the person running the meetings. If you do not ensure they are consistently valuable, you will lose your attendees very quickly. I have seen online forums used for this, but as with any web based comment board, the inputs and timing between comments are highly variable.

While continuous learning is always a good thing, you are most likely to get the most commitment during periods of high organizational change. Once you have gone from Storming to Norming, many people start to see less value in self improvement and instead take the attitude that what they have now is "good enough".
