I've been an independent web developer for about 5 years (HMTL,CSS, JS, WordPress, PHP) and I have been thinking about incorporating project management into the list of services I'm providing. Since project management is a skill that is often glossed over at many organizations, I feel the market need is there, they (meaning companies) just don't know it yet. For example, at many organizations implement new software, training programs, manufacturing processes, etc. without a structured project management plan. Often times, I have seen companies simply pass projects on to functional managers or executives who have little to no project management. My question for the community is, has anyone had any success managing virtual or 'traditional' projects for a company, as a freelancer? If so, was it a lucrative endeavor for you?

Thanks all,

I have use in company and out company PMs. If the project have teams in multiple locations the PM is virtual for some teams and the PM has a practice of rotate between teams to a phisical activities. I am not using freelance option but outsourced PM yes.

In my case Matthew, I've been developing apps of different types for 32 years. Companies have a requirement, some are guided by experience and carry out a needs study to obtain the expected result. But most just want to see the result without investing in the study. It is likely that in your walk you will be among the first and manage to develop all your projective capacity, which will guarantee you an imminent success for your final product.

Project management, like business analysis, is a function that can be done by anybody. It does not require a title or qualification. But this changes when you want to offer it as a consulting service. So while a developer might have been doing their own project management successfully as part of development projects they are involved in it would be very difficult for such a person to actually sell it as a separate service. Not impossible but very difficult. Companies using external consultants look at both experience and qualification.

totally agree.

if the company required external consultants (project manager). that's mean they need an experienced and qualified consultant. (project manager).
