For me it is more of getting the right opportunities in work than certifications. Also i leverage forums like this and conferences for networking. Networking is another avenue for me to learn and unlearn and relearn for career development

I worked at a company for close to 20 years and while they had all the bells and whistle wrt career development it was killed by bad management whos only objective was to show how good they were at saving money i.e. no conferences. But I always paid for my own career development initiatives such as certifications, seminars, conferences, etc. I'm glad I did because it became a habit that is useful when you work for ourself.

Priya makes a good point, the right opportunities brings with it networking opportunities which is vital to career development

Kimberly, I was taking the same progression track with regards to PM developments, and I was given advice about the three major things that people are looking for in the PM world. I have a BA in Business, and I will be getting my PMP very soon. The advice given to me was to get a masters degree in leadership instead of project management because I have already showed by getting the PMP my technical expertise for PMing if you will by attaining the PMP. In a nutshell having a Masters degree and PMP in project management is an overkill.

Thank you Benjamin! That is great advice! I will definitely look into this as I continue to check my next moves.

Brandy Toward IT Support Manager| NM Admin Office of the Courts Albuquerque, Nm, United States

I wouldn't say my agency really promotes career development. (Most people don't even know about the few options available to them.) Luckily for me, I've had amazing supervisors that recognized my strengths and made suggestions as to how they thought I could best utilize them, while challenging me to develop skills in areas where I was weaker. Most importantly, they encouraged me to set & pursue goals.

Because of the impact it's had on me, I try to do the same for my team.

My employers, over the years, have encouraged career development, in different fashion. I have come to the realization that my personal development is my responsibility. I often negotiated with my employers to align my personal journey with their paths and development support.
