I have always seen project activities from end to end, however there was this question that came up in one of my discussions. There would be multiple right answers to this and would be based on the situation.
According to me the most important 3 things are
1. Looking at the completed milestones
2. Look at the key risk that are triggered
3. Is the project already crossed the budget plan
but open for suggestions and recommendations Saving Changes...

1. Look at the project charter, baseline schedule and original project budget.
2. Review the latest status report to evaluate performance of the project and if the objectives are on track, or if any corrections or variances are required.
3. Meet the project sponsor and stakeholders to ensure that:
(a) The business case is still valid and they are committed to the project.
(b) They understand and are happy with the schedule/ cost/ quality forecasts
(c) Raise any change requests/ variations and rebaseline if required. Saving Changes...

If the priority is the completion dates, for sure you have to :
- Control the previsional shedule and HR availability. Are all ressources available for doing their tasks as planned.
- Communicate about the main milestones to verify that all stakeholders are aware. We have to think about all validation works performed by users/client and be sure they will be ready.
- And anticipation is a key word for me. So do a risks review. Saving Changes...
