During the month of October, ProjectManagement.com will focus on Social Media & Project Management.

Where does social media fit into project management? Does it influence your work, your career, or the goals that you've set for yourself?

If you are seeking to understand or serve team members or clients younger than 30, it is essential to understand the impact of social media on work habits and attitudes. I've learned through my mistakes that generations that grew up with constant access to social media expect communication to be continuous, relevant and BRIEF. My stakeholders would not read past the first short paragraph of an email and often will either never read email or will read it after some weeks have gone by. Also, people who are used to communicating via social media are looking for visual communication (pictures and video), not text-based. Know your stakeholders. - JL

Agree. If I may add to what you said, you have to know where your stakeholders are, too. For example, if I'm trying to reach that under 30 crowd that you mentioned, then it's no longer sufficient to simply put an add on Facebook. The realm of social media is very complex.

I think social media is a great opportunity for advancement of the profession and boosting professional interactions and networking. In my local chapter for example, the leadership has created whatsup groups for the members including subgroups for special interets groups such as IT,Built environment,Finance,Development etc and it is great.

These days, social media affects all industries but on different levels. For example. In our construction industry, it plays a big role in building network connections and in marketing.

Great topic, Heather (and it was nice to finally meet you in person yesterday)!

Social media helps us as PMs in a number of different ways of which the following three are just the lowest hanging fruit:

1. For info which can be shared outside a company, a PM could use it to share the wins their teams have facilitated.

2. We can draw upon our network of virtual peers to vent/de-stress and to get ideas to resolve complex problems

3. We use it to further our brand and to find our next roles

In my line of work, I yet to see the use of Project Management. I do see the need for other areas, but not my own. I am still understanding how it could be beneficial.

As I set to answer this question, allow me the liberty to ring fence the definition of social media as a common interest group. To illustrate, a group such as the one we are in now. The platform can be any - Facebook or Whatsapp et all.
Influence on work: This to me is the most significant reason. There is someone who knows a better way to do things. One can get some 'out of the box' suggestions drawing us away from what is said in this quote. . "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
Example: In my early days as system admin when Novell Netware ruled the roost, some important functionalities that existed in release 4.0 was removed from 4.1. This was highlighted by a user in the common user group that we had on yahoo chat; which put us on caution while upgrading the software.
Influence on career: Yes definitely. If one where to look at the change in the landscape of hiring, it says all. Social media is subtly replacing physical networking.
In summary, social media has changed us and the world we live in. It is without the option. Project Management will definitely not be free from this influence. How to leverage this productively is for an organisations and the project managers to determine. At the same time one has to draw a line on what can be disclosed in such interactions.
