One of the fundamental skills of project managers is negotiation.
What is, in your opinion, the most important feature to trade successfully?

Dear Vincent
Thanks for your comment
We agree.
Any negotiation in order to achieve medium term results has to be win-win.
Some say: "Either win-win or nothing done"
What do you think is the most important skill for win-win results?

Dear kiron
Thank you for your contribution to our exchange of views.
Do you consider "Focus on interests rather than positions" as a competency and / or characteristic?
I'd call that a good practice...

Being prepared before you walk into the negotiation. Another technique is to also know what information the other party has on you or your organization which could potentially be used as a leverage. If you know what the other party can use against you i, you will be better prepared to respond.

Realizing that both sides have to gain in the negotiations. If one side takes all, the other side will believe they were mistreated and the deal will be problematic from the start.

I would say the following:
1. Be confident but not cocky;
2. Timing is everything, negotiate when you have the upper hand;
3. Be prepared to walk away if your counterpart is unwilling to compromise and let them know that in no uncertain terms

I watched one of my former bosses (owner/ president) do just this, and he went from starting a business on his kitchen table to being worth several hundreds of millions. Unfortunately, this skill cannot really be taught in schools, but must be learned from others and on-the-job training.

I agree with: "Unfortunately, this skill cannot really be taught in schools, but must be learned from others and on-the-job training"
I can say that I basically agree with all the points you mentioned.
Nevertheless, there is one skill that is considered to be the most important.
Which one, in your opinion?
