Dear Steve
Thanks for your comment
I agree with: "Unfortunately, this skill cannot really be taught in schools, but must be learned from others and on-the-job training"
I can say that I basically agree with all the points you mentioned.
Nevertheless, there is one skill that is considered to be the most important.
Which one, in your opinion?
Master one's emotional intelligence.

Dear Rashid
Thank you for participating in this reflection and for your comment
What specific competency do you think is necessary to be able to negotiate on the basis that both parties win?

1.To know the bigger "take' and be ready to "give" up small things that wont matter in the long run.
2. Empathetic, Communicative and assertive to let the other party trust and follow you.
3. Diminish the other party's options which you don't want to give.

Recently read this book called "Never Split the Difference".. One of my biggest take aways was being prepared and knowing everything you need to know about the person you are negotiating with.
Being prepared before you walk into the negotiation. Another technique is to also know what information the other party has on you or your organization which could potentially be used as a leverage. If you know what the other party can use against you i, you will be better prepared to respond.

Dear Arash
We are completely in agreement.
How can you get this information?
What specific competence is required to achieve this?

To trade successfully, you need someone willing to trade with you. It's very hard to negotiate when the other party has left the table.

Dear Stéphane
We absolutely agree
It is the basic premise for trading that:
1. There are at least two parts
2. Who have something that can satisfy the needs or wants of another
3. Who are willing to exchange what they have to get something from the other party.

However, to negotiate is essential to have some skills being one of them the most important.

My answer was meant to be slighlty provocative and facetious. My intention was to drive home the point that it is important we build a negotiation-friendly environment and experience.

Dear Rashid
Thank you for another contribution to our reflection.

Points 1 and 3 refer specifically to tactics you can use in negotiating.

We absolutely agree with point 2: "Empathetic, Communicative and Assertive to Let the Other Party Trust and Follow You"

What do you think is the most important skill for empathy?
