At the workplace, some of the team members are actively engaged while others are not; I am looking for specific actions, we can take to motivate most of the employees. What specifically we need to do to understand the motivation of yourself and others at the workplace? Saving Changes...

Good Question. Different people get motivated differently but a good guide for employees motivation that you can assess against is Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
Hope this helps.

Hello Mujahid: Some practical ways to increase motivation are acknowledging team members when they positively contribute. I like to do this by setting short term goals with team and then celebrating successes. This seems to build morale and positive energy for the project and is fun! Another way is to focus on excellent communication individually and collectively making sure everyone understands how and why their role is so important to the success of the project and ensuring they clearly understand all the expectations. Agree with the contributions from the other community members. Movtivation is not automatic and should not be viewed as a blanket term. Should be recognition that there are times when individualistic, not solely team level. Saving Changes...
Motivation can be difficult if everyone has no goals or justification for achieving them.
When you think that what you do is affecting others, isn't it worthwhile?
And one more thing, if you want to motivate someone, it's important to get to know them. Saving Changes...

Hi Kiron,
Allow me to echo your recommendation of Daniel Pink's book. I read it last summer as part of my Masters degree program at MSU, and I feel it offers great insight into motivating teams and individuals.

Mujahid -
Read the following three books for ideas on this:
1. Daniel Pink - Drive
2. Patrick Lencioni - Three Signs of a Miserable Job
3. Adrian Gostick - the Carrot Principle
Hi Kiron,

You might check in addition to Daniel Pink, suggested by Kiron, some webinar here. I would suggest you look at Ruth Pearce webinar and if you need more "Be a Project Motivator" I found it very interesting and easy to read. Saving Changes...
