Known facts: 1 - Highly contagious disease 2 - Long incubation period 3 - Low mortality rate 4 - Each country by itself taking protective measures at different times, creating different contamination cycles. 5 - Every person who has caught the disease is not guaranteed to not be hit again. (for now it is not proven to create enough antibodies to be immune)
Are there guarantees that a new outbreak will not occur with the same virus? So how to approach the crisis? The economy cannot be limited forever? We will have to learn to live with the disease like many others diseases that are part of our daily lives? Are our leaders prepared to take this decisions? Are they learning something with this outbreak? Saving Changes...
The challenge with epidemics, and now with pandemics, is that our risk measures are based on the lessons learned from the past which aren't necessarily relevant due to the evolution and mutation of pathogens.
While the lessons learned with SARS and MERS have helped, they have obviously been insufficient to deal with COVID-19.
What will be interesting is to see how many businesses which have been forced to shift to a virtual delivery model will stick with this model once things begin to return to "normal".
My worry is that certain political "leaders" may use the pandemic as a supporting argument against having open trade and relatively easy access across borders.

I like that both of you put "leaders" in quotes. I have not seen significant leadership from anyone. I've seen a lot of reactions and poor communication. And I would lump our new organizations into "poor communication." Scan the daily headlines and you'll see more about politicians posturing for poll numbers than information people can use to navigate uncertain times. It makes it very difficult for everyone to make decisions when good information is so hard to find.
If you shut your front door to guests in a pandemic, the same thing should occur at the boarder. Globalism, in part, is responsible for the spread of the pandemic. I will reverse the insinuation to state that: political leaders may use the closing down of borders and increased restrictions on trade to save lives, as they should. Saving Changes...

And what a great experiment, they are experimenting with our lives, the economy, the result is unpredictable , no one knows when will end.
I prefer to use Occam's Razor here - rather than imagining it as some experiment conducted by a cabal, it is more likely the unfortunate side effect of us ignoring the growing probability of pandemics resulting from a number of less than sustainable agro-business practices around the world.
