One of my colleagues taught a PMP Prep course in early April, and one of the candidates in her class took and passed the online exam.

Here is the un-edited feedback from that individual:

"First of all, I learned that if you have an in-person exam scheduled, you will not see the online option. In order to see it, you need to cancel your exam (Fees are waved for now), and then re-apply and you will see the option.

I will do a quick bullet list of things that are good to know:

• you require a working webcam and microphone
• you can not have your phone near you during the test
• the test is open 30 minutes before to allow you to do the check-in process, which I will detail below
o it performs a systems test to ensure your internet speed is sufficient, and that you have a working microphone and webcam.
o they make you take pictures of your face, your ID (drivers license, etc) and 4 pictures of your desk area (front, back, left, right)
o you sign disclaimers about not sharing details of the test, etc.
• there is a tutorial at the beginning that lets you get used to the provided calculator and whiteboard (YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED A PHYSICAL CALCULATOR OR SCRATCH PAD/PEN)
o the whiteboard has plenty of functionality, and allows you to use text, which would allow the “brain dump”
o here’s an overview of the feature https://home.pearsonvue.com/op/online-proc...eboard-overview
o unfortunately the calculator must be operated with the mouse. It does not interact with your keyboard
• they make you download and install an application (OnVue) which, once the test begins takes over your full screen
• highlight/strike through options are available, but the application makes you highlight the text, and then choose strikeout or highlight (there are keyboard functions, but they are not very intuitive. I think highlight was Alt+J for example)
• There is a chat function at the top. If you click it, it calls a proctor (they won’t be immediate). I did this at the beginning just to see the feature, not realizing how it worked. They just wished me luck, and I proceeded??. This function would be used by the proctor in case of technical issues. If they could not reach you there, they would reach out via phone (this is your only exception to the phone rule)
• just a tidbit, because I was unsure – I had snacks beside me on my desk and ate them along the way, as well as water of course. They did not raise any concerns.
• The 10 minute break allowed me to use the restroom and stretch a bit. I only used around 4 minutes.

Aside from that, the interface is pretty intuitive. Everything I explained above is walked through in the tutorial.

For more information on it, here’s a link. In fact, this is where you need to go to take the test when it’s time!

It would be great if others who have taken the PMP exam online in the near term could share their experiences!

I passed my online PMP exam today.
Here's my experience:

1. The check-in process was smooth. You download the onVue software - Perform system test - Take pictures of yourself, ID and the room/desk where you plan to take the exam.

2. Next you confirm that you are ready to begin the exam and wait until the proctor initiates the exam (your laptop is locked at this point & all actions recorded).

3. There is a 10-minute in-built break after 90 questions. You can wish to skip it but I choose to take it. It's important to note that you can't review the first 90 questions afterwards...so make sure to review them before starting the break.

4. I didn't use the whiteboard, so can't say if it is good or bad.

5. The only problem I faced was with the calculator (I couldn't find it on the screen toolbar). I contacted the proctor via chat but she wasn't sure either. So I managed without it since I only had 5-6 questions involving calculations.

Overall, I think it is a very good workable channel to take PMP exam as long as you can have a distraction free environment. Try not to move your hands often or touch your face or move away from the screen.

Thanks,
Mohit
Real helpful for the thread and community! thanks!

I took (and passed) the PMP online exam in mid-May. I thought it was a very smooth experience. I only spoke to the proctor at the beginning so I guess I stayed off the naughty list during the exam. It's a long test, so definitely plan on taking the 10 minute break in the middle.

I was a bit worried about interruptions from my children negating my exam results but my partner successfully ran interference and it wasn't an issue. Just be aware that if you are a single parent with young children, you will probably want to make care arrangements for your children during this test. You can't simple pause it and return once free.

Overall it was a good test-taking experience and I'm grateful that I was able to obtain certification during COVID-19. Just be sure that you have a space where you can concentrate undisturbed for the duration.

I passed my PMP today!! The online process was super smooth. I had no issues with connection, submitting my pictures/ID, or interacting with my proctor. I was so glad that PMI offered the online proctored exam, I felt much more comfortable doing the test at home (as opposed to the center based test with lots of distractions!). The only "downfall" was no scrap paper/dry erase board so I didn't even bother with a "dump sheet". The white board is helpful to extent, but definitely not suitable for a "dump sheet".

Thank you, PMI for the opportunity to complete the test at home!

Hi Kiron,
Thanks for bringing up this topic. My experience with the exam I took in June is as follows:
-I logged around 25 minutes before exam. It was easy login and testing of systems was smooth.
- I used my own laptop with camera.
- It is good to have your logins ready the previous day so that you can login to your account and access the exam.
I had to remove a pen holder I had on the desk, best to have nothing. I asked the proctor if I could keep a glass of water beside me and he said yes.
- I did the tutorial but now I think it was a waste of time.
- The dashboard and calculator are pretty easy to use ( I practiced earlier online on mba.com)
- I was so nervous so went really slow for the first part of the exam. I used up more than 2 hours for the first 90 questions and review. I didn't know time would go so fast. I had no chance to take even a sip of water.
- I completed the first part and submitted.
- I took around 8 minutes break to use the washroom and drink water.
- I took the next part with less time than I needed, had to go quite fast with each question. For the last 20 questions, I used less than 1 minute on each.
- There were quite a few questions on "closing" as well as "agile" methodology related questions.
After you submit, they ask for a survey which I skipped.
- There were very few calculator questions- maybe 5 at most.
Then they tell you if you passed, thankfully I did to my surprise.

Overall, online exam was very convenient since it is a long exam. My pet peeve is to not start slow and use every second of the exam to answer and review. The exam really tests your concepts and the questions were way shorter than many of the online simulations I have taken (Rita, pmtraining.com, Cornelius free).
I am happy to have the chance to take the exam online and share my experience.

My PMP exam was scheduled today but I was unable to appear due to technical glitch. Just before the exam I did system check and it was successful then I proceeded for the exam, logged in and got the access key for exam but couldn't begin the exam as the network speed test failed every time and at the same time when I was running the system test with dummy access key it was showing successful. I ran system test yesterday and at the time of scheduling the exam as well every time it was successful. I took all the screenshots as well today. My internet speed was showing around 1.4- 3.8 mbps speed. I immediately wrote email to PMI customer care with all the screenshots. At the same time did chat with Pearsonvue customer care and my chat was transferred from one person to another and I was continued writing my concern again and again then the 3rd person logged my case and given a reference number by stating that I need to wait for 5 days and they'll revert back by email. It's not a good experience. Due to Covid situation the exam centers are also closed. I hope PMI and pearsonvue should resolve my issue and allow me to reschedule my exam without charging any additional fee.

I faced exactly the same issue, all system requirements everything was fine. I have been given a case number after getting errors on exam date August 3, still there is no resolution. I have been on call today since morning and pearson vue getting the status for the case. They then transferred the call to PMI and still no resolution. Really frustrating.
