Choosing a methodology

I could use some input/discussion on the best approach/methodology to use implementing the modernization and consolidation of legacy core finance, acquisition, property systems into a single integrated suite of applications. If you have experienced this type of project what methodology did you use (waterfall, hybrid, agile, scrum, etc.)? What did you wish you had used?

I must say I am very appreciative of everyone's input. You have each contributed perspectives and knowledge that are providing food for thought and consideration. I am benefiting greatly from this discussion so, I Thank You! for participating.
Since I posed the initial request I've learned that my customer must transition from their legacy business applications to an enterprise system being hoisted upon them by the larger organization. My customer has to adapt to the larger schema.
