Both are different things. First of all, PMP is the name of the certification. All related to project management, in the view of the PMI, is inside the PMBOK Guide. PRINCE2 is a method, basically. Assuming you are referring to the certifications, I would suggest neither will help you learn project management. I'd recommend a good foundational course in PM aligned with either the PMBOK framework or PRINCE2 followed by some hands-on experience applying what you've learned. Once you have sufficient experience, you can then see which of the two certifications will be of more value in your industry and your geographic location by looking at job postings for roles you aspire to.

as you are in the US, I would target for PMI and PMP. Prince2 is simpler to obtain though (approx 1 week effort vs 20+ weeks) but is not well-known in your part of the world.
As Kiron suggests, there are many courses that can give you the foundational knowledge (and some for free or small money) and you also need the time to apply it and gain experience.

In terms of the certification that has greater recognition and appears to be generally more sought after by potential employers: in UK and Europe, it is PRINCE2; in USA it is PMP.
There must be lots of variations by industry however. Saving Changes...

2. I do agree with Kiron. None of them help you learn project management,

My understanding is that PMP is more widely known, plus there is much more than standard project management these days (i.e. waterfall) and I think PMP is embracing this change into agile and and hybrid project management.

PMP might be widely known in North America but PRINCE 2 is more adopted in UK and Europe in general. PRINCE 2 is also gaining equal traction these days in the Middle East just like the PMP is.

I agree with Sandy that the PMP is gradually adopting more agile into its content and exam. That said, consider whether the PMI-ACP would be best. I have both PMP and PMI-ACP and can tell you that the latter really opened my eyes to how today's successful companies are utilizing agile best practices in being more responsive, creative, innovative, and customer focused. I seldom use PMP practices any more. All depends on your project culture and needs. No two are alike, as we know.

Just other comment based on my personal experience only. As somebody commented above, in USA all related to PMI (PMP certification for example) is well taken into account. On the other side, in Europe, all related to PRINCE2 is more valuated. For example, in England just to put an example. Including that in Europe a new method/process/discipline is born and it is pushed in some places like Spain for example. In Asia/Pacific there is a mix. As I mentioned, if you ask me, for learning project management I would take the PRINCE2 way just because you can find a process and a discipline (fully compatible with PMI practices) into it which seems to me more applicable in the practices, including the Agile based PRINCE2.
