Interesting topic, Josh!

In the interest of "starting with WHY?" while Facilities Management teams will do a fair number of projects each year, a lot of what they do is "keep the lights running" type work so I'd be interested in hearing why this was the focus of a PMIstandards+ content initiative rather than one of many other operational teams?

Kiron,

Thank you for the question and your engagement with the new content PMI is developing for Facilities Management. Our goal is to continue to bring value to our members and community across various industries. While facilities management teams have a lot of focus on "keeping the lights running" type of work/projects, those functions are still critical in success of the organization and enabling teams to function at a high rate. With a strategic goal to expand the impact of our content and expertise of our subject matter experts, it led to the current initiative with developing content to meet the needs of those working in facilities management at this time. With a digital first approach and delivering content in PMIstandards+, we can act quickly to author new, revise and replace content to best meet the needs of the community.

I would love to hear if you have recommendations for what areas and/or industries where PMI might development content next and continue to deliver value.

Josh,

very interesting initiative!

Some clarifying questions:

1. Do you see FM attached to/part of the wider construction industry?
2. BIM 7D consists of facility management information. Is there any reference to it?
3. Any intentions to publish this outside the PMIstandards+, e.g. as a practice standard?

Hi Thomas - thanks for your message and questions. I’ve provided responses below and, if you have additional questions, I will do my best to answer them. .

1) We approached Facilities Management as a field connected to the construction industry. A need arose for supplemental content in this area, related to planning for facilities management during construction projects, and in order to meet this need, we worked with a team of subject matter experts (SMEs) to develop this content for delivery in a digital format through PMIstandards+.

2) Our team of SMEs may reference resources from various sources when authoring content, while adhering to PMI’s publication guidelines. The development team was not given any specific direction about references, beyond the PMI standards and guides – which is a requirement for PMIstandards+ content. With the current content launched this week, we do not have a direct reference to BIM 7D. If you see a piece that you feel would benefit from a reference to this source, please use the feedback options in the PMIstandards+ solution to share this recommendation, or others for future content offerings.

3) The content has been developed with the intent to deliver through PMIstandards+, using a digital first approach. This does not eliminate the option to distribute the content through other offerings, but there is no current plan to publish outside of PMIstandards+.

I've always seen facilities delivery (construction) and facilities management as closely connected. New facilities lead to facility management which in turn results in projects. I don't believe you can manage one without having knowledge of and considering the other. This latest initiative connects the two thus making facilities delivery and facilities management more effective. I will follow - at a distance as mostly retired.
