I’ve been always thinking about what’s going on in our world… Being remote without human contact have always triggered me to think on how much we are honest nowadays in our professional environment.

So I did a small research and found an interesting paper on PMI.org talking about this topic. Although it dates back to 2009, yet I found it so valid, specifically the below:

“Ethics via leadership is the most difficult to implement on the virtual project. The project manager must understand his or her leadership style and his or her ethical behavior, and must constantly uphold ethics. This form of ethics is centered on trust.”

Honesty, trust, fairness, transparency, integrity are the values that will help us navigate through this transitional period.

Do you agree ? Disagree? Thoughts?

Good to see bunch of active conversation. Agree with perception and thought process; while most of the leaders are verifying the deliverables, tracking on projects and being emphatic, trustworthy, transparent to team, retaining them are challenges. Let this too pass
Thank you for your valuable contribution, this is the real challenge, I agree

Hi Gretta,

good conversation you initiated.

Yes, the 5 values you mentioned can be seen as supporting what we call ethical behaviour and we feel good if we see it or do it. Research by Rushworth Kidder indicates that he found 8 human values in most of the societies and cultures he looked at globally. These are respect, responsibility, fairness, honesty (and those are the base of PMI's code) and community, care, humility and autonomy.

Why are they values? Because if they are observed, we feel good, if they are violated, we feel bad, maybe get angry or start to hate. They are human values because they are generally felt by humans everywhere. They unite groups because if they are observed in a group, everybody feels great.

And they are to be distinguished from beliefs, which divide people. Belief systems are important, but feed from disrespect for people not believing.

Regarding transition, I see life or time as a river and we swim in it. We always transition from one spot to the other, sometimes in calm waters, sometimes it is a bit bumpy. After a transition is the start of new transition.

So digitization goes on since 30 years at least, globalization too (despite now being slowed down by western sanctions), a Pandemic takes 3-4 years, and maybe the next one comes shortly after.

We need to learn to swim if we want to have a good time. And we need to promote the human values and follow them if the time we have should be good.

Thomas
Dear Thomas,
You always inspire me with your ideas.
Thank you for stating it so clearly: creating an environment where human are feeling good is the key to successful project implementations.
Also highlighting the difference between beliefs and values is very insightful.
Learning a lot from your wisdom and experience.
