How many people have seen this somewhere within an advert for a IT project manager with the FS industry. Given that it is practically the only sector that is recruiting at present, are they missing out on talent that could very well do the job but do not have the required financial services experience? Admittedly experience to SOX etc would be more that handy if that is what the project is about, however if we take it as read that the primary role of the PM is to manage people, is a knowledge of the industry really necessary, (are FS people a different type of human animal)? David, I do agree with you on your points. Putting high barriers on the domain knowledge perspective may end up missing out potential talents; kind of like 'finding the right guy to do the job but not having the right guy for the job'.
Hi - I'd like to provide some perspective on this topic. I work in the FS industry as a Project Manager.
I feel there is a strong trend towards hiring PMs who DO have FS industry knowledge - private banking, retail and investment banking. How trades get settled and how RMs meet clients and use systems to support their advisory process, etc.
I feel the days of being a "generic PM" are over. These days you need to specialize not only in industry skills but in solution skills (e.g. particular software package) as well. Saving Changes...
I have seen a lot of cases mostly with the on-site/off-shore implementation models, whereby they look out of IT PM's or System Analysts with Business Domain specific implementation experiece.
Examples of such are IT PMs, SA, etc with AR/AP, GL experience for implementations of Financials (ERP) packages.
Similarly, people thise with SCM, etc Functional experience.
It makes you a key-player from the Techiology as well as Business side, and thus the Project Implementations are smoother.
