Both are work boards, but a typical Scrum board usually has only three columns (To Do, In Progress, Done) whereas a Kanban board might have columns reflecting every distinct stage where value is added to a work item.

Kanban boards might also use WIP limits (board-wide or column-specific) and classes of service for different types of work items.

Kanban board is a board to track process flow of activities, maintaining a specified amount of work within a sprint. Typically real examples like JIRA, Pivotal Tracker, etc..

Scrum board is similar in a sense where you track its tasks within the number of sprints. It can be used in similar fashion and carry a lot of the same similarities.

Kanban is a project management method that helps visualize tasks, while Scrum is a method that provides structure to the team and schedule. Kanban and Scrum are project management methodologies that complete project tasks in small increments and emphasize continuous improvement.

However, if you are in Manufacturing area using Kanban board may make more sense. This helps in identifying bottle neck as your WIP (Work in progress) gets collected. A more detailed analysis can be done to resolve the bottle neck like fish bone diagram and proper actions taken to make work flow smoother and reduce WIP or clogging.

A scrum works better for software tasks that you do in iterations. Work can be broken down to small chunks that are digestible or can be done incrementally.

Both follow the philosophy of continuous improvement or Kaizen where eliminating waste and improving productivity on a continuous basis is the idea.
