I am currently in the Telecommunications Industry as PM. To be specific, in the FTTH Rollout. I have been thinking to expand my industry reach in IT. But I have no experience. Where should I start?

One option would be to manage other IT/Telecommunications fields, like Telephony, Internet/Optic Fiber, Cellular networks, etc. In this form, you can gain more experience in the Industry.

assuming that in your projects you have interfaces to other kind of work/projects like IT or construction. You could talk with these guys and see if you either can extend your project scope or switch into their realm. Which would be a low risk evolutionary approch.

You also could connect with IT project managers, e.g. via PMI / Chapters and expand your network. Or join other IT PM professional associations.

You could also take a more risky approach and apply for IT PM jobs.

Applying as IT Project Manager sounds like a very big leap, considering that I don't have any IT background to begin with.

That's why I'm asking if I should start at the bottom in an IT company.

Have you tried to reach out within your current company, as Veronica and Thomas suggest? It's always easier if you can stay within your current employer, as they would know your performance.

you could apply as as a assistant IT PM or PMO staff.

A PM must not be a good SME, if they are not, they ask a lot of questions, which is great. Many IT PMs I know take a pride in solving technical problems, which they should avoid (since many IT projects are small, like 3-4 people, PMs tend to have a role of SME in parallel). Also IT is a wide field, from sw development, testing, infrastructure to rollouts. If you can install apps on your Iphone you already are a IT guy for some.

If you are a bit a risk taker, go for it.
