In the definition of business case on PMBOK, what exactly does it mean "a selected component lacking sufficient definition" ? Thanks! junior PMP Student here

It means that a business case (justification for spending time and money) is used prior to creating something new or changing something that already exists.

You have identified some need and are recommending a project to fill that need. The solution for that need is not completely defined yet though. It may just be a conceptual or partial solution. The output of the project is the completed (sufficiently defined) solution/product.

The business case explains the rationale to take fill the need with a complete solution.

I hope that helps.

I believe you should consult a Master Black belt or Black Certified Lean Six Sigma Consultant regarding your project.

The definition from PMBOK Guide v7 adds helpful context:

"A value proposition for a proposed project that may include financial and nonfinancial benefits."

As Keith indicates, the business case is prepared before the solution is fully defined. Since they are used to justify pursuing a project, they are usually created before detailed requirements have been defined and tasks with owners, durations, and dependencies are identified.

It means that, at business case time, you have a limited information and detail about the solution to be created. What some people call "high level estimated". Then, the numbers inside the business case will have an associated level of probability and because of that puntual estimations should be avoided. You can understand this if you search for Barry Bohem´s "Cone of Uncertainty". The Cone was created for software solutions but it was taken for long of other activities including time ago the PMI published the percentages in old PMBOK versions.

I agree with the explanation of my fellow colleagues here. Sergio, Aaron and Keith explained it well.

A Business case establishes the Project Justification, Business needs, and Business Strategy, prior to starting a Project, so, the ideas are general, and not completely defined, because the complete definition will be done later when developing a Project Management Plan.
