Dr. Deepa Bhide Hyderabad, Telangana, India
I recently received an invitation to review a paper on organizational behavior from one of my colleagues. My colleague is a mid-career member and a part of a well-reputed IT firm involved in software development and maintenance for Fortune 500 companies.

He informed me that he had written the article using ChatGPT. I reviewed the article, had some suggestions, and sent it back to him.

ChatGPT seems to be taking over the writing domain where the model creates essays, and letters, answers questions, writes emails and blogs, etc. While I think we are making great progress with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning, I wonder about this new tool's authenticity and ethical grounding. I am also told ChatGPT can help answer some of your personal health questions. This can compromise personal health information.

Would like to hear from you all on your thoughts on the ethical considerations around the use and application of ChatGPT.

Dr.Deepa,

ChatGPT answering personal health questions is like answering questions like on a case to case basis, I assume. I am really not sure how it affects privacy and confidentiality. Unless someone confuses the machine to be a human or sign up for it like we do on mobile phones.

The way AI works is based on data. If you have enough data to feed the machine (in this case Chat GPT), mathematical algorithms are written such a way that the A.I learns and adapts itself based on different answers and scenarios. The more possibilities are fed into it the better it becomes. At this point Chat GPT I believe has started generating 90 percent of codes (programming ) by itself. Which receives people from doing even intelligent monotonous work. Some say Chat GPT is like an extension of Wikipedia except that it is more smart because it learns, adapts and interacts like humans with intelligence. (Paradoxically, I am seeing lot of layoffs too, but I don't have concrete proof that it is because of this innovation like Chat GPT. There are other factors like Geo politics, inflation, cost of financing, getting back to pre Corvid times or normal time, etc. that are reasons for it.)

That being said, A.I has its own benefits if used correctly.!

For example, the algorithms or machine can predict failures of big power plant systems. This helps engineers be proactive and take actions at the right time for the plant to keep working continuously. it also results in more efficiency.

Like wise another I can give you another example in aviation. With aviation industry (commercial) having 60 years of experience (data), enough information can be fed into the A.I and algorithms predict when the different components fail including the system, subsystem and critical components. But to do this is not a overnight job. All verticals (different business units of commercial aviation) is to be connected with A.I acting as the central nervous system. It would take good 5-7 years at least to do so. Once do the benefits that you reap is immeasurable. This will result in better planes that are more reliable can self navigate and land (autonomous in the future) where you can start with having breakfast in Tokyo, lunch in London and dinner in New York.

As far as the future, with A.I humans have to learn to live together. There will be hands on work that will have more value or expertise in robotics, A.I and integration of products that will be always required. what it does is, It lessens effort for humans to do routine thinking and what will be required is connecting dots to keep the big systems going on.

In the end, there will always be something more to do and much better.

Twenty years back, I used to print a google map on a manual printer and navigate on my car, then came bulky GPS and today you have smart phones which navigate your everyday much better and safer and even into unknown places. Who imagined the world would change so fast.

And the next twenty-thirty years would be even more interesting !

Microsoft just announced that its Bing search engine (at www.bing.com) has been upgraded with OpenAI technology. To cite, Microsoft "has rolled out ChatGPT-enabled 'new Bing' that not only gives you the list of links like other search engines but works as an intelligent tool to present the information in an easy and summarized way. The new Bing allows users to search the way you talk, text, and think." A robust governance (and, perhaps, regulatory) framework to ensure transparency and accountability (in both ethical and academic perspectives) from its application becomes more acute.

I am concerned that society is not ready for this upgrade. We already live in a world dominated by search engines and the internet with people believing just about anything they read much of it misleading, one-sided or just plain incorrect. I do my searches with one thing in mind "everyone is selling something" so be wary.

I know people that use the internet to second guess their doctors, dentists, kids teachers, you name it. Some will even use Google to validate newspaper articles without considering the Google source. 'If its not available on the internet it can't be true'. Consider the followers (believers) the 'conspiracy theory pushers' have including QAnon etc.

This will make search results APPEAR even more believable by attaching some AI credibility. "I don't have to think about what I'm being told, the AI does that. It must be true because AI is involved."

I'm trying real hard to maintain my faith in people's ability to think but I believe we are going to lose 50% of them when this upgrade comes about.

There are talks on "Responsible AI" and laws and other frameworks are being drafted, but still, I believe, there are no concrete announcements yet.

Should be easy - just ask AI to do it on our behalf.
Q: Is ChatGPT responsible?
A (per Bing ChatGPT): "If a human uses ChatGPT's irresponsible or nonsensical answers, ChatGPT's creator Open AI states that the the the human is to blame. Thus ChatGPT is responsible by outsourcing responsibility and accountability to human users, thereby implicitly agreeing to be inferior to humans. In many modern uses of AI, decisions are made by the technology." Note: this is a direct quote.

Conclusion: ChatGPT is not responsible, the human user is! How many humans will take this statement into consideration when relying on AI answers?

Artificial intelligence tools are just that tools. Every day we can improve documents that we have produced but also help others in their needs. Using technology for the benefit of communities is a good start for reflection.
